Gough genealogy is an exploration of the history of our family from Ardington and Manchester in England in the U.K. and Cape Town in South Africa and offers news and info about the family tree in search of all the details of our ancestry. My father was born here in England and this is the reason why we are very keen to put down all the info we have, of that part of the Gough family. We would be very interested in learning more about the family and of course any details on other branches of the family tree.
The Gough family crest.
My name is Brian Gough and my wife is Barbara (nee Tarr) and we have come across from a tiny coastal town named Tableview in Cape Town, South Africa, to settle here in England in a small rural town called Pershore, Worcestershire, which is in the west midlands. Our eldest daughter (Deborah) is also here with her two sons (Gareth and Brandon), as well as our youngest daughter (Jennifer). They all live here in Pershore.

My
father was Frederick Vincent Gough and as I said above, he was born here in England in a very tiny village called Ardington which was at that stage in Berkshire, but has since been rezoned as being in Oxfordshire. Ardington is in the Wantage district. I am putting down all the info I have about the Gough family history and sincerely hope there are people that will be interested in what I have put down and will respond with any info they might have on the family. I am of course very interested in learning more in the search for info on our ancestry, and any details on other branches of the family tree.
Fred Gough.
On the left is a picture of my dad (Fred), I do not know when it was taken but he looks about 18 or so. My dad and his brother (Clement), left England to go over to Australia when they were about 20 years old (approx. 1920). Apparently they worked their way over on a steamship as stokers. From there my dad moved on to South Africa and Clement stayed on in Australia. Apparently Clement, a few years later, left Australia and went across to what was then Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) where he stayed for some years until his death I believe, apart from the war years when he was in the Air Force.
On his arrival in South Africa dad stayed in a rural area some miles outside Cape Town in a little town called De Doorns which is in the Karoo, where he worked for the postal service carrying the post across the country areas on horse-back. A pretty tough life style I should think! I believe he also used to enjoy entertaining the locals in the village pub singing and playing the ukulele. Eventually he moved on to Cape Town itself.
This is Fred (my dad) writing a letter to my mom (early 1940's.)
It was there in Cape Town that dad met and married my mother. She was an Iris Millicent Hubbard. That was in 1939 and almost straight afterwards(a couple of weeks I believe) Dad signed up and went off to war. Mother was not too well pleased I don't think. He got back in 1945, which is the year that I was born. My dad never, as far as I know, returned to visit England again and his only contact was the odd letter I suppose, so I have no further knowledge or information to go on.
And before that......
My
great, great grandfather Patrick Gough was born in Birr, Kings County (Offaly) in Eire in 1773. I do not have his wife's name. He was in the 5th dragoon Guards from 1797 to 1822. Their son Joseph (my great grandfather) was born in 1808 in Guildford, Surrey.
Joseph
married an Anne Grelis (born 1811/12 in Birr) in Guildford, Surrey. I do not have the date. Joseph was a tailor and Anne was a dressmaker. He joined the 5th Dragoon Guards in 1826 until he retired from the Army to Lichfield, Staffs. in 1850. They had 5 children as follows:-
Joseph
b.1833 in Great Connel, Bembridge, Kildare. Joined the 5th Dragoon Guards 1848 to 1873. Retired, I believe to Halifax, Yorkshire.
Charles
John b.1839 in Lenten, Notts. Joined 5th Dragoon Guards 1857 to 1879. Retired to Redhill, Surrey.
Patrick
b.1843/44. in Birmingham. I have no further info.
James
Valentine b.1845 in Chorlton, Lancs. Also joined the Army (I do not have details) and served in India for 10 years.
Annie
b.1849/50 remained unmarried. Died 1932 in the Portsmouth area.
James
Valentine is the one we must concentrate on here.
My
grandfather was James Valentine Gough and he was born in Chorlton, Manchester in March 1845. Like all the other sons in the family he joined the Army and served 10 years in India. I unfortunately have no details of dates etc.
After
his discharge from the Army, James became a butler and married Eva Cole b.1864 (daughter of Matthew and Sarah Cole of Guildford, Surrey) in 1888. James then took out a victuallers license and became inn-keeper at the Boars Head Pub in Ardington, Berkshire.
Church Street in Ardington with the Boars Head pub on the left. When my wife and I arrived in England and went to visit Ardington to see the pub, we were amazed at just how little it has changed. The chains in front have been removed and there are modern cars in the street, but otherwise looks exactly as in the photograph.
And to continue.......
I
will list now the children of James and Eva, as at the time of the 1901 census. The family all lived on the premises of the Boars Head, so most of the kids were born there. The eldest daughter (Eva F.) was obviously the Fiona mentioned in the 1891 census.
Eva F.10 ------------born Ardington.
Hugh
son 8----------born Ardington.
Mabel
daughter 6-----born Charlton.
Reginald
son 4---------- "
Jessie
daughter 2-----born Ardington.
Clement
son 1--------born Ardington.
Frederick
Vincent born later that year 1901).
Ardington Church.
Very sadly Eva (my grandmother) died in 1909 leaving a very young family. James died in 1921 in Ardington at the age of 76 and is buried in the cemetery of this wonderful little church which is right next door to the Boars Head pub.
Of
the Children:
Eva
married a William Simpson in 1916 in Wantage and they had 5 daughters. Eva died in 1928.
Hugh
went to live in Perth, Western Australia and married Lily. They had no children. He died in 1973.
Mabel
married an H.Adams in 1929 in Wantage. They had no children, Mabel died in 1943.
Reginald
married a Jennie Corkett in 1922, they had 2 sons (Reg & Ron). Reginald died in 1974 in London.
Jessie
was unmarried and died in 1979 in London.
Clement
died in Rhodesia
Fred
was my father, we covered his story earlier on the page.
I
sincerely hope that my web page has been interesting and of some value to people who are into genealogy and are also looking at the history of their families.
To
hopefully be of some help to our visitors from the U.S.A., I have added a searchbox for census lookups.
I have joined Gough genealogy to two web rings which will enable you to explore similar websites and thereby gather more information before returning to the Gough genealogy page.
